Rust's May update in detail: workbench upgrades, the mortar and trapped tin cans
Upgrade hard, raid harder landed on 7 May 2026 with a new long-range raiding weapon, a reason to guard your workbench, and a batch of remakes.
Workbench upgrades
Workbenches now take upgrades: nine in total, each with a different bonus, and you can combine them freely. They cannot be crafted and are not common loot. Open the workbench's inventory to add them; each one also changes how the bench looks, so a full set is visible at a glance.
The mortar
The mortar is a new deployable weapon for use against players and bases. It works like a cannon but stands on flat ground and fires over long distances. There is no aiming guide: you estimate the angle, ideally with binoculars. Each shot kicks the barrel up slightly and lands a little differently, so repeating a hit takes skill. There are two shells, one for damage to players and one for structures.
Tin can alarms can be trapped
Tin can alarms still clatter when someone crosses the wire, but can now be loaded with an item that is thrown when triggered: an F1, beancan or bee grenade, molotov, flashbang, smoke grenade, supply signal, flare or firecrackers. They can be placed anywhere, including inside monuments.
Vending machines
The vending machine screens were redesigned. Setting up offers is faster through a built-in inventory, skins can be sold individually, and existing offers can be reordered without deleting them.
Binoculars and the Salvaged Cleaver
Binoculars have a new model, animations and interface: right click to look through, left click to switch between three zoom levels, and they are cheaper to craft. The Salvaged Cleaver was rebuilt with a new model and animations.
Also in this update
- Computer stations now need power.
- The boat vendor at the Floating City sells modular boat parts and a cheaper DPV.
- Deep Sea loot was reduced, and scientist boats carry fewer guns.
- Animations for grenades, bandages and syringes no longer cut off when you use the last one in a stack.
- New achievements for the Naval Update.
- Boats with a flat bow now have much more drag.
